These [mainly incompetent] photos, along with other images were part of my Entrance Interview for the 1974 Prahran College of Advanced Education [Photography] intake. When Athol Shmith viewed the work he told me I had created a Photo Essay – I had never heard of a photo essay.

Astonishingly, I was lucky enough to be accepted into PCAE.

It changed my life.

I want to make it clear I was ‘driven’ to make these photos, but the mare and foal were always my priority.

August – September 1973, 6.30 am. Mare & foal.

Students received an induction by the Marketing Manager – who stated he “would never employ a female photographer because they are not strong enough” – then we had total access to the factory.
